EEOC sues Tesla alleging widespread racial harassment of black workers

  • The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has filed a lawsuit against Tesla for allegedly allowing widespread racial harassment of black employees, and retaliating against black workers who spoke out against it.

The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has filed a lawsuit against Tesla, accusing Elon Musk’s electric car maker of violating “federal law by tolerating widespread and persistent racial harassment of its Black employees, and by subjecting some of those workers to retaliation for opposing the harassment.”

Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The federal agency responsible for enforcing civil rights laws against workplace discrimination announced it had filed a lawsuit against Tesla on Thursday.

Tesla was previously sued by a state civil rights agency in California over related allegations. A jury also previously ordered Tesla to pay about $3.2 million in damages to a former black worker, Owen Diaz, after finding that he was racially discriminated against while working there in 2015.

Last year, A Financial deposit Tesla revealed that the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has issued an injunction against the company. Tesla subsequently engaged in a mandatory conciliation process with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). The reconciliation process was not successful, leading to the lawsuit being announced on Thursday.
