Marcel Hauge defends the men's wheelchair, breaking his own record

Marcel Hogue has done it again.

“The Silver Bullet,” nicknamed for his distinctive silver helmet, broke his own record to defend his Boston Marathon title in the men’s wheelchair division with an unofficial time of 1:15:32. This win marks his seventh victory on Patriots Day.

Hug broke the course record by one minute during his 2023 win and shaved another 30 seconds on Monday.

Elite men and women take off and run

Elite groups of men and women make their way through Hopkinton, the first stop on the long journey across the Commonwealth.

American Emma Bates jumped to the early lead in the women's group, as did Ethiopian Sisay Lima for the men.

The leaders in the men's group are expected to finish at approximately 11:38 a.m. ET, while the top women should cross the finish line during the noon hour.

What is Patriots Day?

Patriots Day is a state holiday in Massachusetts commemorating the beginning of the Revolutionary War. It is held annually on the third Monday of April, the same day as the Boston Marathon.

MLB also schedules a morning game for the Boston Red Sox on each Patriots Day while the Boston Marathon takes place less than a mile from Fenway Park. The Red Sox and Cleveland Guardians are scheduled to play Game 1 on Monday at 11:10 a.m. ET.
