In 2021, he joined TikTok and its parent company ByteDance in the dual role of TikTok CEO and ByteDance Chief Financial Officer. Chew reports to Byte Dance CEO Liang Rubo.

Chew is married to Vivian Cao and they have two children.

What is the fame of Chev?

Americans know little about Chew compared to other Silicon Valley social media giants like Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, said Brooke Erin Duffy, a Cornell University professor who studies social media platforms.

“Siv has so far had a background in public speaking, so he doesn’t have the same reputation that we associate with the Silicon Valley set, particularly Zuckerberg,” he said.

Most Americans may have first heard of Chev this week when he posted a video of him speaking directly to TikTok’s US users, who said, “So he doesn’t have the reputation of someone he knows, and (we) don’t have a sense of who he is. He’s the one.”

But Chew is well-respected in the US and China tech communities. Dan Ives, managing director at Wedbush Securities, said he was considered a good fit for TikTok because of his background in investment banking and his work at Facebook and DST Global.

“He earned a lot of respect by taking a high-risk, in-the-hot-seat role at TikTok,” Ives said, adding that the company may have thought he was the right person to ease tensions with US lawmakers.

Why is Chev appearing before US lawmakers?

He assured lawmakers that TikTok’s approach would “never dismiss or trivialize” concerns about “unwarranted foreign access to US data and potential manipulation of the TikTok US ecosystem.”

“Today, US TikTok data is stored natively on Oracle’s servers,” the CEO said. “Only verified individuals operating in a new organization called TikTok US Data Security can control access to this data.”

Chew said TikTok plans to take US user data and send it to an independent US board for review.

He added, “The bottom line is this: American data is monitored on American soil, by an American company, by American personnel.”
