A new NASA trailer features a movie-style supermoon advertisement.
NASA will join the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) to announce the four astronauts who will fly around the moon during the Artemis 2 mission. You can watch the big reveal here on Space.com on Monday (April 3) at 11 a.m. EST (1500). GMT) via live NASA TV broadcast from Ellington Field, near NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.

“This is a new era of pioneers, star sailors, thinkers and adventurers,” NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said at the opening of the flight. The quote is a response to the words Nelson said On September 12, 2022 (Opens in a new tab) At Rice University in Houston, on the 60th anniversary of then-President John F. Kennedy gave his famous speech “We choose to go to the moon” at the same location.
In the 1960s, Kennedy was promoting what became known as the Apollo Program. When Kennedy spoke, NASA had just begun its first Earth-orbiting mission and was engaged in a space race with the Soviet Union for scientific supremacy and reputation. Having said that, even Kennedy was considering space cooperation with that country before his death.
Things today are much different. Artemis 2 is the precursor to the NASA-led Artemis Accords, a collaboration of 23 countries (including Canada) working together for peaceful exploration and work on the Moon. Artemis 2 will fly around the moon no later than November 2024 in the first manned visit to the lunar kingdoms since the Apollo 17 landing on the moon in December 1972.
Canada secured its seat aboard Artemis 2 by providing, via MDA, the futuristic Canadarm3 robotic arm that will serve NASA’s planned Gateway space station in lunar orbit.
The Canadian Space Agency also confirmed in late March that it would extend its participation in the International Space Station through 2030, along with key partners NASA, the European Space Agency and Japan. (Russia has said it plans to exit the partnership sometime after 2024.)
Artemis 3, a planned lander at the Moon’s south pole currently set for 2025, will rely on surface space suits from Axiom Space (disclosed in part during a recent event) and a spacecraft lander system from SpaceX that may be tested in Earth orbit in shortest time. like april.
NASA pledged that the Artemis missions would be more comprehensive than those of the Apollo era. Agency officials said Artemis 3, for example, will put the first woman and first person of color on the moon. The CSA astronaut aboard Artemis 2 will be the first non-American to leave Earth orbit.
