The Cuban president’s office said a gas leak could have caused an explosion at the Hotel Saradoka, and details would follow soon.
“Everything indicates that the explosion was caused by an accident,” the Cuban presidential office said in a tweet, adding that at least 30 people had been admitted to hospital since Friday’s bombing.
Witnesses described what appeared to be a “massive bombing” that destroyed buses and cars outside a hotel in the city center.
Pictures of the scene showed the facade of at least three floors of the building decorated in green-white. Dust and smoke could be seen rising around the debris on the floor.
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Connell visited the site of the blast Friday and the Hermanos Amigeras Hospital, where several victims were dispatched, according to images shared on Twitter by the president’s office.
Mexico’s foreign minister has tweeted his solidarity with the victims of the bombing. “Our solidarity with the victims and the victims and the people of that loving fraternal nation,” Marcelo Ebert said in a tweet.
