Official Helldivers Twitter account He announced that the players' last operation was successful, where Super Earth forces wipe out an entire enemy faction. The Automatons were trapped in a few standing worlds days ago and were defeated for good today, which begs the question: where does the game go now, without an entire enemy type?
“You did it, Helldefers,” Arrowhead announced. “The quick disassembly was a success! With the robots eliminated and the bugs contained, the galaxy is free again.”
It's an incredibly bold move for a live-action game, even the notoriously fluid and interactive Helldivers 2, set in wartime and sporting surprising gear upgrades by a mysterious GM known only as Joel. Swift Disassembly began on Friday, with a three-day time limit for players to complete enough quests on the planets owned by the robots: Maia, Durgen, and Tibit. With Dorgen's downfall today, it certainly seems like the robots are going broke.
As PCG staff writer Harvey Randall points out, replaying Helldivers' Groundhog Day's first episode of Galactic War on a monthly cadence may provide a clue as to where we're headed next. Helldivers 2's more in-depth story management could mean a more twisty and surprising path, but I doubt this is the last we'll see of the Automatons. We also have a remaining faction from Helldivers 1 that is still entirely MIA, the Illuminati, who are bound to show up sooner or later.
One thing's for sure though: Helldivers 2's straightforward storytelling is unlike anything you've seen before. I'm still haunted by Destiny 2's brutal season of The Worthy, where very few people wanted to do its boring seasonal activity to fill a meter and move the plot along, Bungie moved the numbers to make that happen. Meanwhile, Helldivers 2 has real stakes and momentum, as well as the feeling that it could always go either way.
