Giants Points vs Packers, Fast Food: New York beats a double deficit in first-half in London, moves to 4-1

The New York Giants’ superb start to the season across the pond continued into week five, upsetting the Green Bay Packers of London, 27-22, to go 4-1 on the year. Brian Daboll’s team found themselves two numbers behind heading to the locker room in the first half, but he shook 17 points in the second half — including 14 in the fourth quarter — to climb back. They also kept Aaron Rodgers’ attack and the Packers zero point at this stretch.

It was a brilliant attempt by Daniel Jones, who struggled with an ankle injury he sustained last week to play in this match. He completed 21 of 27 for 217 yards and added 37 yards on the ground. He was the catalyst during a 15-game run for 91 yards and helped New York tie even the Packers at 20 in the early stages of the fourth quarter. Then Sacon Barkley – who left this game briefly with a shoulder injury – returned to the field and gave the Giants the green light to land on the goal line at the 6:08 mark in the fourth.

Of course, Aaron Rodgers didn’t go quietly into the night bringing the Packers all the way to the Giants’ 6-yard line with a game-tying chance at 27 with a minute to play. However, New York’s defense ramped up significantly and hit two consecutive MVPs, including the fourth and second play that essentially decided the match.

Rodgers finished 222 yards and two touchdowns on 25 of 39 passes. Aaron Jones rushed for 63 yards on 13 buggies, while Randall Cope drove all the pass catchers by about 99 yards with seven catches. As for the Giants, Barkley had 106 yards of melee and a green light touchdown. Darius Slayton scored six of his seven goals for 79 yards in the win.

Why did the giants win?

There appears to be a 100% subscription to Brian Daboll’s system. The call-up to offensive play was top notch for New York throughout the day, especially after the first quarter. The Giants initially struggled with some ineffective Sacon Barkley passes at or around LOS, which made them 0-3 to start the day at the bottom of the awkward and settle in with just three points to start the day with three drives. Then, Daniel Jones started pushing the ball down the field under these conditions and the Giants had more success and were able to move the chains. After going 0 for 3 in the third touchdown to start the game, New York finished going 6 for 8 in third.

Daboll was also willing to empty his bag of tricks on this game, put Barkley into the wildcat to run reading plays (likely due to Jones’ ankle injury) and even had his own version of the “Philly Special,” which resulted in Daniel Bellinger rushing to land before the break. While New York may have wanted to limit Jones’ quick attempts at points in this game, Daboll also knew when to call his number, calling for a third and fourth tie in the second half to extend what would prove to be a field goal cut.

On the defensive side of the ball, Wink Martindale gave spells to Aaron Rodgers throughout the match, concealing the pressure and even being able to apply it while only sending out four lunges. He was kicked out twice a day and hit six times. This pressure forced Rodgers to take the ball out quickly at times during the competition, and even if he was able to get the ball into the hand of a skill center player, New York quickly devoured them.

Why lose packets

The offense is still in progress for Green Bay, but there were also some head-scratching calls on that side of the ball as well. With the offense stopped in the second half, calling up Matt LaFleur didn’t do his team much good, especially at key points in the game. After the Giants tied the game at 20, the Packers went by three goals and earned zero yards in their next possession. Two of those shortcomings by Rodgers were unnecessary deep snapshots of Allen Lazard. Aaron Jones nor AJ Dillon touched the ball in that engine.

Later, the players had the ball at the 6-yard New York line and 1:11 left on the clock with two laps in their pocket. Instead of running in position three and one to give themselves a new set of touchdowns to try to tie the game at 27, Rodgers slid back to pass twice and both of his throws fell on the line and New York took charge in a touchdown.

There was also a dangerous and unnecessary penalty called for corner back Rasoul Douglas after Darius Slayton was thrown to the ground after the referee’s whistle. Had he maintained his composure, the Giants would have faced a third situation. Instead, they got a new set of touchdowns and Barkley scored what proved to be the game’s winning touchdown.

turning point

Momentum really turned in favor of the Giants during their 91-yard run at the end of the third quarter to lead the game at 20 apiece. With Saquon Barkley temporarily sidelined on this trip due to a shoulder injury, Daniel Jones put together the best pusher of his tenure in New York. He was a 7 of 8 passes for 55 yards and rushed for another 25 yards to push the Giants down the field, doing so with a bloodied right hand over the ankle injury he sustained last week.

Immediately after this scoring campaign, the Giants’ defense forced the Lakers to play a triple and the attack immediately exited where they had left off and went on another landing flight. This time, Saquon Barkley – back in action – was the main gear, tearing down 41 yards, running and eventually rushing to get the green light.

play the game

It looked as if Aaron Rodgers was about to pull another rabbit out of his hat after the Giants took a 27-20 lead late in the fourth quarter. With 6:08 on the clock, he led the Packers on a 69-yard run that took the attack to the Giants’ 6-yard line and it looked like they were destined to beat him in the game. He may go to work overtime.

After Aaron Jones ran it in the middle for a two-yard profit, the Packers were down for a third and 1. Next, Rodgers proceeded to pass him in two consecutive games, which was hit by the Giants, namely Kayvonne Thibodeau and then Xavier McKinney.

This flipped the ball down and left the Giants basically just to run out of the clock. The defense also came later when the ball returned to the Packers in the final seconds and prevented Rodgers from throwing a Hale Mary for the win.

What’s Next

From here, both teams will return to the United States. New York will be waiting for the Baltimore Ravens for their Week 6 game at MetLife Stadium. Meanwhile, the Packers will return to Lambeau Field and prepare for a home game with the New York Jets.
