Dennis Eckersley is leaving the Red Sox booth soon. He probably won’t see many Pirates games as a regular fan.
The Hall of Fame loyalist, 67, set the Pirates’ “pathetic” roster on fire during Boston’s 5-3 win Tuesday night.
“You’re talking about a no-name squad. There is no team like this,” Eckersley said. “This is a mixture of nothingness. It’s silly. It really is.”
Eckersley and his broadcast partner, Dave O’Brien, have compared the rebuilding of the Pirates negatively to those being carried out by members of the royal family.
“It’s ridiculous. It really is. ‘Pathetic,'” Eckersley said with the Red Sox already leading 5-0 in the second half.
The Buccaneers range in age from 45-71 this season and a combined 194-306 over the past three seasons.
Fortunately for the closest Legend A, this will likely be the last series I’m forced to watch playing Pirates. Eckersley told the Boston Globe He will leave the NESN booth after the season.
“Having grandkids in the Bay Area and visiting them in the off-season has really pushed me forward,” Eckersley said. “I just learned, you have to go and be with the kids. Those formative years, you have to be there.”
