The Cleveland Browns sign the Pro Bowl Cornerback Denzel Ward CAA Sports’ Tori Dandy, who negotiated the contract, told ESPN’s Adam Shifter a five-year, $100.5 million contract extension that includes a guaranteed $71.25 million.
At the age of 24, Ward is now the highest paid player in NFL history. The average annual salary of $20.1 million puts it ahead Galen Ramseywho was the highest paid cornerback at $20 million a season on the deal he signed with the Los Angeles Rams in 2020.
Ramsey congratulated Ward on his new deal, Twitter: “I’ve been waiting for someone else to touch that 100 club and you definitely deserve it @denzelward…congrats.”
Ward is now under contract with Brown for another six years, until the 2027 season. He’s under contract for $13.294 million this season after Brown exercised a fifth year option on his contract last year.
The Browns picked Ward fourth overall in 2018, the same draft that quarterback Baker Mayfield picked #1 overall. Ward gets a second contract from Brown, but Mayfield and the franchise are headed for a split after Cleveland traded a quarterback. Ward was selected to join two teams of the Pro Bowls in his first four seasons – his rookie year in 2018, and 2021.
He has 10 interceptions, two replays for touchdowns, and 50 defending passes in 52 games.
