talking on “Excuse Me” Podcast.Thompson spoke about her experience as a sideline reporter and the conversations she had with coaches and players, primarily before or immediately after halftime. Usually, before the game starts, the sideline reporter will give whatever details the coaches have told her, but sometimes she makes up what they say.

“I’ve said this before, so I didn’t get fired for saying that, but I’ll say it again,” Thompson said. “I would do the report sometimes because the coach didn’t come out at halftime or it was too late and I’d say, ‘I didn’t want to mess up the report,’ so I’d say, ‘I’m just going to make this up.’

She then explained that there was no harm in anything she would say to the public.

“No coach is going to get mad if you say to them, ‘Hey, we need to stop hurting ourselves, we need to be better on third down, we need to stop turning the ball over and do a better job of getting off the field.’” she continued. “For example, they won’t correct me on that. I think it’s okay, I’ll just do the report.”

“A large portion of the public does not trust the media as it is.” said Athletic reporter Chris Kirchner. “I can’t believe she would admit it so proudly. This is doing a huge disservice to people who take the job seriously. It’s completely unethical and I deserve to never work in this field again.”

“What a bad look for the job at hand,” said the former NFL star and Apple TV MLS analyst. Taylor Twellman said. “Sideline reporters who work hard to gain respect for the topics at hand do not deserve this narrative. If you lie, you hurt everyone in the profession and those who come after you. Weak.”
