Rumors of a so-called PS5 Slim have been circulating pretty much since the launch of the PS5 itself. And perhaps for good reason — the latter is so massive that gamers have been crying out for a slimmer design. But if it looks anything like these new leaked images purporting to show off the new console, fans may be disappointed.
Images began circulating this weekend of a new console case, codenamed “CFI-2016.” It is very similar to the current PS5. Unlike Sony’s previous “Slim” releases for PlayStation consoles, it looks like the PS5 iteration won’t deviate from the original formula. (Don’t want to wait? As spotted by The Verge, images of the new model’s alleged outer casing appeared on Chinese forums before a video surfaced on the Twitter page of an Australian PlayStation repair specialist (below).
But while it certainly looks smaller and lighter (we’d have trouble waving our PS5 around with one hand like that), there’s no denying that the design looks a lot like the much-mocked PS5 itself, with the addition of a black horizontal stripe in The front of the case, and an additional USB-C port. We’ve already heard that the next iteration of the PS5 will feature a detachable disc drive, and it looks like it might as well.
Needless to say, Twitter users reacted with great glee to the suggestion that this could be called a “slim” console. “Is this like a 1950s gangster movie joke, where an overweight idiot is called a skinny?” One user comments, while another simply adds, “They uh… really missed the ‘Slim’ tag here, huh?”
People call this PS5 Slim, but it’s more like going from PS5 THICCC to PS5 THICC. https://t.co/T991OTm6KJAugust 12, 2023
Of course, until the footage is proven to be authentic, we can’t know for sure that this is the real deal. And with previous rumors suggesting the next PS5 won’t look any different, A.J a little Slimmer is the good news, we think. Hello, as long as this person does not melt.
