Introduction
With all the different types of flash media available today, it's no surprise that multifunction readers have surfaced for the convenience of the end user. Like many of you, I've personally experienced the suffering of having to individually connect devices through proprietary cables just to transfer a couple files. In most cases, it is much easier to read the removable flash memory of a mp3 player or digital camera with a separate reader rather than connect the entire device to the computer with a USB cable. Bootability also adds to the attractiveness of flash memory, as the USB devices that read them ARE bootable, making floppy disks rather obsolete. In fact, there are many striking similarities between floppy disks and memory cards as a removable media in terms of convenience. They differ when it comes to price and performance, but the latter certainly makes up for the former.
Today, we'll look at two types of USB media writers. The first is from Mitsumi, an internal 7-in-1 drive which can be found for about $20 from any online outlet. The second is a generic external 6-in-1 reader/writer, tons of which are listed on Ebay for under $10!
