Sennheiser PX100 Headphones Review - The Joy of Duofol in the PX100s
(Page 5 of 6 )
As I stated before, our Chief Editor, Gnorb, recently reviewed another, more expensive set of Sennheiser headphones. Since these have some of the same internal features as those, rather than try to reiterate everything he said I will just plop down a quote from his article.
“As I looked at the documentation included with the headset, I began to understand why the sound seemed so much clearer when compared to other headphones I had encountered. The headphones' are built with a duofol diaphragm, which reduces standing waves, which lower the general quality of sound. Even though these use a dynamic, as opposed to electrostatic transducers, the quality is quite high, due to a special dampening element which is supposed to reduce diaphragm oscillation. The difference between “dynamic and electrostatic is explained in the following passage from the included technical manual:
‘Unlike dynamic transducers whose diaphragm is driven from the center in ring waves by a moving coil, the diaphragm of the electrostatic headphone is driven over the entire surface area... A diaphragm moved in this way follows the sound frequency with excellent high fidelity... An electrostatic headphone offers a very impressive precision of the music reproduction.’”
One of the things that Sennheiser lists as a feature is "High-resolution sound due to Sennheiser ‘Duofol’ diaphragms with spiral embossing," which Gnorb explained above. I tried to capture in the image below, so you can see the spiral embossing in between the little "spokes."

And on the left of the picture above you can see an upclose shot of the notch I spoke of earlier, used to keep the phones locked in their folded position (to the left of the headphone).
In the shot below you can see the black spaces between the plastic "spokes" that allow a good amount of sound to escape. Since these are obviously open-air headphones, you can't complain too much, but due to the fact that these are so clear and loud, it is quite easy for everyone to hear what you're listening to. I noticed my fianceé singing along to a song that I was listening to while we sat a few feet apart. I asked her how well she could hear it and she said she had no problem discerning any of the lyrics. This could definitely be a problem for some of you.
