The Inkjet Conspiracy
If you've compared the prices of new printers with the prices of the printer cartridges used to fill them and wondered whether there was a conspiracy going on, you're not alone. This widespread problem has even led to legal action. Keep reading to see what's going on, and what, if anything, we can do about it.
Chances are, if you are reading this article, you are an avid computer user. The chances are also good that you own a printer of some sort, probably of the inkjet variety. I have three in my house, though only one is currently being used, and I've recycled at least four printers prior to these.
According to census reports, more than 55 percent of American households have at least one computer. I couldn't find any survey data on how many of those households own at least one inkjet printer, but considering the fact that nearly every commercial computer vendor nowadays offers an inkjet printer for a small additional fee (or even free), I think it's reasonable to guess that the percentage is significant.
The huge popularity of the inkjet printer is due to several factors. One is the flexibility of the process -- you can not only print high-quality documents, but also digital photographs, t-shirt transfers, bumper stickers and CD labels, among other things. Inkjet printers are fairly inexpensive, particularly in contrast to other printing systems such as laser. In fact, there can be times when buying a replacement printer will cost less than the price of replacement inkjet cartridges for your existing device.
