    2008 Tech Preview

This year (2007) was great for computer technology, but 2008 is shaping up to be even more exciting. We will see faster and better computer hardware, but also some new technologies will be making their way to the consumer market. The newest technology from 2007 should find a nice niche in the market and settle down. But this article will take a look at what 2008 has in store for the technology frontier.

    Operating Systems

This is normally the first OS I would touch on, but we have three major releases coming next year. The first is XP SP3. After what happened when SP2 was released, you can be sure that Microsoft would try and get it right this time. But as the world moves to Vista, this becomes a less exciting release. SP3 promises to bring some new features and should package all the security updates into a single bundle. This is signaling the end of XP’s life. May XP rest in peace.

XP isn’t the only operating system getting a Service Pack in 2008; Vista is getting one too. The supplement looks like it will throw a whole lot into what many say is an unfinished operating system. The service pack may finish up the design and performance of Vista. SP1 will also bring about DX 10.1. I hope to see this as the nail in the coffin for XP and what gets people to finally move over to Vista.

Finally we will see Windows Home Sever. This is Microsoft's first try at creating an easy to use home network server. It will allow sharing at a level easier than previously achievable and also a quick and simple way to back up your data. It can be thrown onto your old computer and shoved into a corner and left alone. I think this will be a must-have for home users with multiple computers in their network.
