4. Gateway T-6836
Gateway’s T-6836 falls in the $700-$800 range and like most laptops in this price range, it features the standard Core 2 Duo processors and more RAM and hard drive space than Sony’s NR430. The Gateway T-6836 features a 64-bit version of Vista and 4 GB of RAM. Not only that, but it performs well and has decent battery life.
Most laptops featured on this list weigh in around six pounds and feature a 15-inch screen, but Gateway’s T-6836 will save your child from having to lug around an extra pound, as it weighs in at about five pounds. Despite its slighter frame, Gateway’s laptop still serves up a 1,280x800 resolution with a 14-inch display, which is a resolution usually only found on 15-inch displays. It’s not uncommon to find the T6836 listed for around $799 online, but it’s currently on sale at Best Buy with a $150 discount.
3. Dell Studio 1535
Dell’s Studio 1535 laptop falls in the $800-$999 price range and it showcases some design features commonly associated with high-end XPS laptops, but thankfully it sells for a price that’s in line with Dell's Inspiron models. The Dell Studio S1535 has a fast Core 2 Duo T8100 processor and a healthy three hours of battery life.
Dell’s Studio 1535 is more than a attractive design, too. The laptop features affordable, yet powerful components, such as its already-mentioned processor, 4 GB of RAM, and an impressively large 320 GB hard drive. Parents can rest assured that this is an excellent choice for students in need of processing power.
