If you are in the market for a thin and light laptop but do not want to encounter the typical obstacles with such a design (a smaller screen and no optical drive), then take a look at the Asus UL50AG-RBBBK05. The UL50AG is a mainstream 15-inch laptop that you can find in retail stores in a configuration that is suitable for many of your casual computing needs.
Besides its excellent thin-and-light design, the UL50AG has decent performance, excellent battery life, and a pretty solid feature set. You can get the Asus UL50AG-RBBBK05 in retail stores for approximately $679.99.
The machine comes with a standard one-year warranty on parts and labor. You can get reference material from Asus’ website as well as email support. They have a toll-free line that you can call for live support on Monday through Friday during certain business hours.
As mentioned earlier, this particular Asus model is found in retail stores, so what you see is what you get in terms of features when viewing it in-store. The UL50AG comes with a 1.3 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 dual core processor and 4 GB of DDR2 SDRAM. This particular processor is an ultra-low-voltage (ULV) one, which sacrifices some of the computer’s performance in exchange for longevity with respect to battery life. Since it is in the thin-and-light category, which usually emphasizes portability and long battery life, such a ULV made sense.
The result is decent performance, especially with respect to other thin-and-lights or netbooks; still, it's not as impressive as other laptops in the 15-inch size range. Many will probably be willing to make that sacrifice, however, as the UL50AG does a good job when it comes to multitasking due to the Intel’s two processing cores and the 4 GB of RAM. The laptop also handles normal everyday computing tasks, and light multimedia with some gaming as well. Just do not expect a blazing-fast system that will knock your socks off.
