at this point, ChatGPT needs no introduction. The chatbot took the world by storm late last year, and hasn’t let up since, impressing us all with its ability to answer questions and create things while repeatedly passing by. Turing test. While artificial intelligence is changing rapidly, faster than many expected, so are ChatGPT’s features. One such feature is the ability to save your conversations for later, without having to copy and paste them elsewhere.

How ChatGPT saves your conversations for later

If you primarily use ChatGPT on your computer, you may have already noticed this change. On the desktop, ChatGPT has added a new sidebar, which shows all the conversations you’ve had before (at least all conversations that ChatGPT has saved). However, you do not need to use ChatGPT on your computer in order to access past chats. If, like me, you order things from ChatGPT using the web app on your smartphone, you’ll find this new sidebar by clicking on the hamburger menu in the upper-left corner of the screen.

ChatGPT automatically assigns titles to each chat based on the first question you ask. Really cool to see in action: headers remain “new chat” while ChatGPT answers your question. Once done, it renames the chat with an exact title based on what she said. For example, ChatGPT asked, “What are the important math concepts to know when learning to code?” She gave me her answer, then renamed the chat “Math for Coding”.

If you don’t like the name ChatGPT gave to your chat, you can rename it yourself. Select the chat in question, tap the pencil icon to give it a new name, and then tap the checkmark to save it.

While there is no reason to believe that ChatGPT will stop saving these chats in the future, they are not backed up this way, at least not in the traditional sense. If you had a particularly interesting encounter with a chatbot, and you want to preserve that interaction for posterity (or to share with your friends), it might be a good idea to copy and paste it into a note on your phone or computer.

How to delete ChatGPT conversations

While many may find this automatic indexing of past conversations useful, others may not. After all, ChatGPT got started pretty quickly: you’ll strike up a conversation, then leave it behind, ready to start something new next time.

It’s easy to delete conversations, if you want to: choose the conversation in question, select the trash can icon, and then choose the check mark to delete it. You can also clear your entire conversation history from the Clear Conversations options towards the bottom of the sidebar.
