The Met Gala has banned 3 foods from its menu – and here’s why Anna Wintour doesn’t like them

Food, drink

The flowers may be for spring pioneerBut some flowering plants are not.

The 2024 Met Gala on Monday marked the debut of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s new exhibition “Sleeping Beauties: Fashion Remade,” titled “Garden of time“.

But Anna Wintour, Vogue’s global editorial director, recently revealed — somewhat ironic this year, given the subject matter — that three flowering plants are banned from the Met Gala menu: garlic, onions, and chives.

“Those are the three things I don’t particularly like,” said the 74-year-old fashion expert, who has been overseeing the event since she became co-chair in 1995. She told Jenna Bush Hager On the “Today Show.”

Wintour’s well-manicured thumb is present in every aspect of the event, from the hand-selected guest list to the food served inside at a seated dinner, the latter a part of the indoor celebration that fans don’t get to see.

Josh Jackson, executive chef/owner of Great Taste Catering in Los Angeles, speculated that banning certain foods is a personal choice for Wintour.

“She doesn’t want the food to affect the celebrity guests’ breath. There are also many people who are actually allergic to the Allium family of bulbous plants, which is rare but possible.” Parade said. Alliums include the three plants mentioned previously, plus leeks, shallots, and green onions.

“But that may be an exaggeration,” Jackson continued. “The real reason is that she doesn’t want to see chives in the guests’ teeth. It’s understandable.”

Wintour also had a long-standing ban on parsley — because it can easily get stuck in your teeth — as well as bruschetta because it’s messy and could ruin someone’s clothes.

This year’s top-secret menu has been created by caterer Olivier Cheng to make the meal “romantic and a little ethereal, but focusing on the best seasonal ingredients”. Fogg said.

“Drawing inspiration from the lush gardens and palaces in the fantasy world of Sleeping Beauty, we really aimed to build our own little fairy tale.”

Among the items on the list, as revealed by Vogue magazine:

  • A spring vegetable salad with elderflower foam, raspberry vinaigrette and olive crumble was the first course and was meant to resemble soil and be garnished with garden-worthy butterfly croutons.
  • The main event was filet of beef with rose tortellini. Cheng revealed that the presentation included “a beef float on a pine needle and a mushroom chute.”
  • As for dessert, it was a “non-poisonous apple – a delicious nod to the famous fictional blob in ‘Snow’.” “White,” Vogue reported. This involved “almond cream molded into the shape of a small apple, covered in a bright red mirror glaze, and finished off on a nutty ‘paper’,” Chen proudly announced.

The co-hosts at this year’s Met Gala were Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, and Chris Hemsworth.
