The Masked Singer Season 10 Premiere Recap: Anonymous Revealed – Variety

Spoiler alert: If you haven’t seen the Season 10 premiere of “The Masked Singer,” which aired Sept. 10 on Fox, don’t read above.

“The Masked Singer” kicked off its 10th season Sunday night with a special episode — and Lotta Lovato. As “Anonymous,” Demi Lovato was the first unmasked celeb this season — though there is one star. Lovato didn’t appear as part of the match (otherwise they would have absolutely continued in future weeks), but only once.

Lovato, of course, got her start in Disney — aka Mouse House — via the Disney Channel movie “Camp Rock” and the series “Sunny With a Chance.” So the “Anonymous” character is an allusion to Lovato’s identity under the mask.

Lovato first performed “What About Love” by Hart. “Like Michelle Obama, Oprah and Angelina Jolie, I’m on a special list: The Times 100,” they offered as the first clue to their identity anonymity.

Here’s the second clue: a concrete slab that says “Anonymous”. Lovato, still in character, said: “It’s a real solid clue. My acting career has established me as a skilled pointer.

And then there was the clue package voiceover from Anonymous: “When I learned that ‘The Masked Singer’ needed a mystery guest for their milestone 10th season, I knew I was the right rodent for the job. I started working young. But my big break came when I was able to express my voice. While my future looked bright on the outside, I struggled with demons on the inside. The more I pushed, the more I felt myself slipping. Stuck on a path of wrong decisions. Eventually, I hit rock bottom. But that was the wake-up call I finally had to realize, I still have more life to live. Now, I make it my mission to find happiness wherever I can. That’s what I’m doing here. It’s time for me to stop. Y’all have kept me guessing for the past nine seasons! But if this mask is taken off, you will see that there is no mouse like me.

Among the early names thrown out by the group: Miley Cyrus, Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Hudson, Kelly Clarkson, Pink and Lovato.

Returning for season 10 is host Nick Cannon, along with Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Nicole Scherzinger, Ken Jeong and Robin Thicke.

For Anonymous Lovato, Dickey, Scherzinger and McCarthy Wahlberg got it right. Jeong went with Lady Gaga.

Lovato’s appearance coincided with the Sept. 15 release of her new album, “Revamped,” for which she has re-recorded 10 of her songs as rock versions. Lovato will perform live at the MTV Video Music Awards this Tuesday. (She was nominated for Best Pop and Best Video.)

“The Masked Singer” will feature a new format this season, with three groups followed by battle royale semi-final episodes. The season also includes the introduction of a wild card for each team and the return of wild card contestants, and the return of “ding dong keep it on the bell” in the Battle Royale semifinal episodes, where the judges can choose to save a contestant. Move them straight from elimination to the finals.

With a total of sixteen celebrity singers, Season 10 features new costumes including “Donut,” “Anteater,” “Hawk,” “Hibiscus,” “Diver,” “Gazelle,” “Royal Hen” and a life-size “S’more.” ” marking the show’s 10th season, there are also celebrities who have previously been unmasked since the show began.

The season’s themed episodes will feature tributes to Elton John; “Trolls Night” tied to the November release of DreamWorks Animation’s “Trolls Band Together”; “Harry Potter Night” airing during Halloween week; “NFL Night”; “One Hit Wonders”; “Disco”; “Night of the 2000s”; “I want to be awesome”; and “The Soundtrack of My Life.”
