Seablip has been on my radar for a while thanks to the Next Fest demos because who can resist the appeal of a game that plays like Terraria, remixes cool FTL ship management, and has a boatload of pirates? Fortunately, the proper Early Access version of the game has enjoyed smooth sailing and glowing reviews.
Seablip is a gorgeous side-scrolling pixel art game that has you captaining a pirate ship across an open world map filled with islands to explore and treasures to plunder. You can also stop to fight random enemy ships and claim your title as the most feared pirate on the high seas.
What reminds me of the roguelike FTL is ship management, which consists of unlocking 48 different upgrades, strengthening structures, adding magic armor or fire damage, and recruiting different sailors, each with their own unique traits and skills. Micromanaging kids at work is always fun in games – for me, not for the poor things being controlled.
When you’re not distracted by other hidden finds, secret treasures, and various mini-games, Seablip Early Access tasks you with facing seven different bosses (bounties), with more to come via updates.
Steam user Reviews So far, we’ve talked about the refreshing vibes, satisfying progression, and the way the game packs a bunch of inspiration into an ocean-sized melting pot. There also seems to be developer notes left in some unfinished sections, which I think more Early Access games should feel comfortable including.
“The goal is not to rush out of early access but to maintain continuous and valuable updates over time, with the goal of reaching full release next year (if possible).” steamlib Description reveals. The Seablip is usually available for £12.70/$13.50, although there is a great introductory offer at the moment.
