The cornerstone of the Portland Trail Blazers franchise has been an inspiration for Henderson’s growth.
When the Portland Trail Blazers selected Scott Henderson with the No. 3 overall pick, it wasn’t the first time he’d crossed paths with Damian Lillard.
In a feature on Henderson written by Meryn Vader in Ranger Back in December, she told a story when the third-place finisher reached out to a lady on Instagram for advice.
But being so close to that goal is also exciting for him. Around midnight the night before, relaxing after an Ignite game, he received an Instagram direct message from one of his favorite players: Damian Lillard. “Crazy,” Scott says, gleefully. He had originally reached out to the Trail Blazers star in 2021 asking for advice: “Yo, Damian Lillard. I’m Scott Henderson. I was just wondering if you could give me some freebies when you shoot the next shot, and not worry about the last one?” Scott was struggling. To let mistakes go, he berates himself, and tries so hard to be excellent. trying to be great.
Scoot tries to play it cool when he reads Lillard’s response. “He was telling me he was messing with my game,” Scott says. “It’s like, ‘I saw you play’!” Lillard told him not to get caught in the missed shots: “Shoot that shit like you know it’s going to happen.”
It is very likely that Scott will be drafted to replace Dame in Portland, perhaps as early as next season. But if the two remain teammates, it appears they already have a relationship dynamic that should help the Blazers.
