Sailors sign Justin Upton – MLB trade rumors

Mariners signed as a defensive player Justin Upton For one year, the league was held. The move was officially announced by the club, and in a corresponding deal it was correctly identified Adrian Sampson Set to clear the list space. Upton will report to the Mariners’ extended spring training camp in order to ramp up his debut with the team.

Bob Nightingale reports from USA Today (Twitter link) was the first to announce Upton’s signing, and indicated that Upton would earn about $550,000 in the deal, or a pro-rata portion of the MLB minimum salary. M’s will cover the $550,000, while the Angels will still owe Upton the remainder of his original $28 million salary for the 2022 season.

The Angels released Upton just before the season began, ending the player’s four-year career in Los Angeles. Originally acquired from the Tigers in August 2017, Upton was already under contract until the 2021 season but kept his opt-out clause, agreeing to forgo the clause when Halos entered another year into his deal. The extension added $17.5 million in new money to Upton’s contract and closed during the 2022 campaign.

Unfortunately, it was a deal the Angels regretted, after Upton struggled through the 2019-21 seasons. Due to both injuries and a slight lack of production, Upton has hit .211/.299/.414 with 38 home games over 784 in the past three seasons. Between that lack of hits and dwindling left-field glove work, Upton has been almost a replacement player, generating just 0.1 fWAR since the start of the 2019 season.

Early in his career, of course, Upton was a standout player, with a resume that includes four All-Star appearances, 324 career participants, and a .262/.343/.471 slash over 7,592 PA with five different organizations. Picked up by the Diamondbacks with the first overall pick for the 2005 draft, Upton is a very familiar face to Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto, who worked in the Arizona front office during Upton’s tenure with the club.

For the cheapest, there’s little risk to Dipoto and the Mariners figuring out if Upton still has anything at age 34. Sampson was only claimed from concessions from the Cubs earlier this week, and he may now move on from Seattle without a single appearing in any of the minors or majors. Swingman’s 2022 biography to date consists of one MLB round with Cubs and 19 2/3 rounds with Triple-A Iowa. The Washington native broke into the majors with his home state Mariners in 2016, marking the first of Sampson’s five major league seasons – the Right has 5.13 ERAs over 189 1/3 innings, with 125 1/3 of those tires coming with the Rangers in 2019 .
