Bungie is bringing Marathon back as a PvP-style shooter that looks and feels as sci-fi and action-packed as you’d expect from the team that brought you Destiny 2. As the standard of quality in the world of high-stakes service gaming, it makes sense that the studio would want to take things to the next level with Marathon. And the plan appears to be to do just that

Something that has come up a few times, it seems, is the idea of making an “Ultimate Live Service” marathon. One source said the team is aiming for single-digit load times, from standby to live server play.

Players of Escape from Tarkov know that this alone is a game-changer. Additionally, the various Marathon maps will have secrets hidden in them for the community to obsess over. In fact, Tarkov is referenced frequently, with the same basic gameplay loop in place, which Insider describes like this:

  • Choose your missions (to complete in the game)
  • Buy/choose your gear/perks/abilities/gear
  • fell into the server
  • Hunt for loot / complete quests / explore and find secrets
  • Extracts
  • Spend XP on updates
  • repeats

It is also understood that there are three maps currently in development, but it remains to be seen if they will appear at launch.

Furthermore, Tarkov staples such as Permadeath will be present, and single players will be able to take part in the action but will find themselves pitted against duos and trios. It looks like there will also be some kind of oxygen system in play, further feeding into the survival elements. Shooting and case rupture were given as an example, with other injuries (bleeding and concussion) having negative effects on gameplay as well.
