Nintendo announced the untitled game centering Super Mario‘s Princess Peach On his live show on June 21. It’s been nearly two decades since we last saw the smiling Pink Princess as a true hero. The last time it got its own game was 2005’s Platformer Super princess peach.
That’s right, Princess Peach will play the main character in a brand new game, Nintendo developers said through a translator.
The puzzle game was mentioned along with Nintendo Super Mario RPG remake advertisement—The much-coveted Super Nintendo release will be released on November 17, and Nintendo is also currently working on a remaster of the 2013 fearsome 3DS game Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon.
Back to the peach, though. Nintendo was shy about the details, but from the brightly colored trailer, I’m already feeling really excited about it.
In the very short trailer, we see Peach Blossom on stage and then run through her ensemble – complete with fax castles and knee-high enemies – as she makes her way to victory. A seven-pointed star (with ribbon arms!) trails behind her, harnessing her powers to eliminate enemies blocking her path and complete set pieces, like a bare cherry tree that needs more frothy blooms.
Something interesting happens when you “step over.” this The developers said. A cutscene appears to set off, and Peach stars around until her dress turns Cinderella blue, then a white supernova.
“What on Earth is going on?!” developers say. I don’t know, Nintendo, tell me.
There’s no release date for the project yet, but since Nintendo Direct focused on 2023 games, I’m guessing it will be on our hands soon.
Earlier this year, Peach was one of the highlights of the The Super Mario Bros. movie. –Well, as good as you can be in a movie Kotaku Managing Editor Carolyn Petit described in review as a “company brand-building exercise”.
“Princess Peach here is wonderful and competent and hasn’t relegated to being the damsel in distress she has so often been Mario games,” Betty continues, “but it’s still a shallow archetype.”
As Peach’s first game in a long time, this untitled game is a great opportunity for Nintendo to correct its habit of falling into metaphors. I’ve always loved Peach’s beauty and dresses, but I’m sure she’s capable of more than that, too.
