PlayStation 5 sales top 38 million after its best year on the market

The Sony PlayStation 5 has just concluded its best year in the market to date and has surpassed 38 million units sold as a result.

Revealed in the latest Sony Financial earnings reportPlayStation 5 sold 6.3 million units in the fourth quarter (Q4) of the 2022-23 fiscal year. This was more than three times stronger than its sales in the previous year’s fourth quarter, when it sold just two million units.

After selling 32.1 million units by the end of the third quarter, the PS5 has now reached 38.4 million units sold. Sony also sold nearly as many units in fiscal 2022-23 as it did before that point, with 19.1 million PS5 units sold compared to 19.3 million previously sold.

The last quarter of 6.3 million wasn’t the strongest, with 7.1 million PS5 consoles sold in the third quarter. However, this is a fairly regular trend, as the third quarter includes the holiday period that usually leads to a significant increase in video game console sales.

The increase in overall sales is likely related to the fact that PS5 consoles are now readily available as Sony Interactive Entertainment president Jim Ryan said in January that the inventory shortage is basically over.

The PS5 has faced significant production issues due to component shortages plaguing the video game industry and beyond, forcing Sony to reassess its sales forecast for the 2021-22 fiscal year.
