PFT’s Week 12 2022 NFL Awards

Twelve weeks in the books. It’s time to recognize those who made the biggest impact on the game during Week 12.

It’s the weekly PFT Awards. One winner for each of the five categories, with plenty of finalists who at least deserve to have their names called.

Offensive Player of the Week: Eagles Quarterback Jalen Hurts.

On Sunday night against the Packers, Hurts became only the fourth player to accomplish one very specific feat.

In the same game, 150 yards passing and 150 yards rushing.

Hurts became a MVP shortlist candidate due to his abilities and leadership, which helped propel his team to 10-1. He’s become a much better passer, but his running combines the raw athleticism of Lamar Jackson and Justin Fields with superhuman ability Patrick Mahomes To understand how his body moves in space for the players trying to manipulate him.

Hurts helped lift the Eagles to 336 rushing yards against Green Bay, and to keep them ahead of the Cowboys for the division title, and the Vikings for the top seed.

Other Finalists: Raiders running back Josh Jacobs (303 yards from scrimmage), Jets quarterback Mike White (315 passing yards, three touchdowns), Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson (nine catches, 139 yards, a touchdown), Jaguars receiver Jones costume (11 catches, 145 yards, 2-point conversion), Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence (321 passing yards, three touchdowns), Bengals receiver T Higgins (seven catches, 114 yards, one touchdown), Panthers receiver DJ Moore (four catches, 103 yards, a touchdown), Brown running back Nick Chubb (116 yards rushing, a touchdown).

Defensive Player of the Week: Defensive End 49sec Nick Bosa.

His stat line doesn’t scream dominance – one sack, one tackle for loss, two quarterback hits. But the 49ers made it through Sunday’s game against the Saints, and Bossa was the most important part of his defensive effort.

In the end, Bosa’s dismissal came with the 49ers up a 13-0 lead, facing the Saints in fourth-and-goal four.

Enter the bossa. Leave the saints. And for the fourth straight game, the 49ers did not concede a point in the second half. In this, they didn’t give up a point in the first half either.

Other Finalists: Browns Defensive End Miles Garrett (1.5 sacks, one tackle for loss, three quarterback hits), Cowboys player Micah Parsons (2 sacks, 2 tackles for loss, 2 quarterback hits), Bengals defensive lineman Sam Hubbard (1 sack, 2 tackles for loss, 2 quarterback hits), Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver (1 sack, 2 tackles for loss, 2 quarterback hits), Panthers linebacker Brian Burns (two sacks, one tackle for loss, three quarterback hits), Raiders defensive end Max Crosby (1.5 sacks, one tackle for loss, six quarterback hits).

Rookie of the Week: Steelers Quarterback Kenny Beckett.

Kenny Pickett is ready for prime time. and going on to be the starting quarterback in the NFL.

The numbers weren’t bating an eye. He completed 20 of 28 passes for 174 yards against the Colts. But he looks the part, making throws when you need to make them — and running when he runs is the only option. Gained 30 yards on the ground against Indy.

His best throw of the night, the combination Lateral movement and accuracy of needle threadingand had a two-point conversion and seven leadoff points.

Every delegate he gets this year will prepare him for next year. And while it may be too late to get back into the 2022 playoff race, it’s never too early to get a head start in 2023. The Steelers and Pickett are doing just that.

Coach of the Week: Bengals coach Zack Taylor.

The Bengals managed to stay under the radar for most of the season. After taking down the Titans in Tennessee, they are clearly teetering on the flip of the screen.

Taylor’s team beat the Titans in large part by shutting down running backs Derek Henry. Defensive linebacker Sam Hubbard (a finalist for Defensive Player of the Week) told PFT by phone after the game that the goal was to get to Henry quickly, since he leads the league in yards after contact.

“We’re really focused on getting along well with their crowd,” said Hubbard. “It will take more than one to take him down.”

Henry made a long winning break on a screen pass. “We said, ‘That’s it, no more big plays,'” Hubbard said. “We did a good job after that.”

Hubbard also echoed a message Taylor sent to the locker room after the game. Although AFC teams may get hype, the Bengals can’t be ignored.

“Everyone has to play with us,” said Hubbard. “Whatever anyone else says about the others, at the end of the day they had to play us. That’s our mentality.”

It’s very similar to their mentality from 2021. And that mentality led them to the Super Bowl.

Play of the Week: Raiders running back Josh Jacobs 86 yard touchdown run in overtime.

Nearly 35 years to the day after Bo Jackson’s Raiders ran 91 yards for a touchdown in Seattle and disappeared into the long-vanished Kingdome tunnel, Jacobs would run for 86 yards in overtime to cap a franchise record 303 yards from scrimmage.

As Jacobs told Peter King of Football Morning in America, Jacobs (who found a lot of general motivation from being on a contract year, thanks to the new system he didn’t pick a fifth-year option) drew specific motivation from a Seahawks fan who had a sign that said, “3 -7. Not bad for a team with no talent.”

“He was yelling at us, ‘All this nasty stuff,'” Jacobs said. “I just looked at him and said, ‘Thank you for that. I needed that today. You turned me on.’”

And on one play, Jacobs took out the Seahawks.
