DENVER — Pete Crowe-Armstrong has the kind of elite defense and added speed that could make an impact in the postseason chase. The Cubs are putting that idea to the test as they make a final push for a spot in the October playoff.
The Cubs promoted Crow-Armstrong, the No. 12 prospect in MLB Pipeline, from Triple-A Iowa on Monday for Chicago’s road series against the Rockies. When he entered the visitors’ clubhouse at Coors Field, there was a series of enthusiastic hugs and handshakes as he made his way across the room.
“I feel like I just got my moment to catch my breath,” said Crow Armstrong, who was sitting in the dugout before Monday’s game. “It was a little difficult to get into the club, but everyone was most welcoming. Yes, it was a beautiful sight when I walked in.”
The Cubs arrived at Coors Field three games behind the first-place Brewers in the National League Central. Chicago is also in second place in the NL Wild Card, sitting two games behind the Phillies and two games in front of the D-backs.
The Cubs optioned outfielder Alexander Canario to Triple-A Iowa and designated Anthony Kaye for assignment to open spots on the active and 40-man rosters, respectively, for Crow-Armstrong.
Cubs manager David Ross noted that Crow-Armstrong will have some “mixed” starts, adding that the center fielder could help give the spacious Coors Field outfield. Cornerback Jimmer Candelario was out of the lineup on Monday after leaving Sunday’s game with a strain on his back.
The arrival of Crow-Armstrong gives Ross some roster flexibility. If Candelario needs to rest a couple of games, Cody Bellinger would be an option at first base (along with Patrick Wisdom). Mike Tauchman is Chicago’s main alternative at center, but now Crowe Armstrong offers another option.
“He got the summons,” Ross said. “We have a group of people who got us here, but he can definitely help us.”
