London – Oxford University Press has named ‘rizz’ after itself Word of the yearhighlighting the popularity of the term used by Generation Z to describe someone’s ability to attract or seduce another person.
“Swiftie” (an ardent fan of Taylor Swift), “Situationship” (a casual romantic or sexual relationship), and “Fast” (instructions given to an artificial intelligence program) topped the annual decision made by experts at the magazine’s publisher. Multiple size Oxford English Dictionary.
The four finalists were chosen by public vote and the winner was announced on Monday.
The publisher said the word rizz is thought to come from the middle of the word charisma, and can be used as a verb, as in “rizz up” or chatting with someone.
“It speaks to how younger generations are creating spaces – online or in person – where they own and define the language they use,” the publisher said. “From activism to dating and broader culture, as Generation Z increases its influence on society, differences in viewpoints and lifestyle are evident in language as well.”
