BERLIN (AP) – A man crashed into a pedestrian on Wednesday in the popular Berlin shopping district, killing at least one person and injuring at least eight, rescue services said.

The man drove the car over people on the street corner around 10:30 a.m., then brought the car back onto the road and then crashed into a store window around a block, police spokesman Thilo Cablitz said.

Fire Service spokesman Stephen Salsvedal said the number of injured was eight. More than a dozen people were injured, police said. Police said the condition of many of them was critical.

Cablitz said the driver was detained by passers-by before being quickly arrested by a police officer near the scene. He said police were trying to find out if he was deliberately driving on pedestrians or if the accident was caused by a medical emergency.

He said he had no further information about the person who drove the small car, or that he had no further information about what he had told the police so far.

A large number of rescue vehicles and first aid personnel were at the scene.
