DETROIT — Nissan is recalling more than 236,000 minivans in the United States because front suspension tie-rods can bend and break, potentially causing drivers to lose steering control.

The recall covers some Sentra compact cars From 2020 to 2022. Tie rods help vehicles move the wheels to steer.

If tie rods flex, they can break and affect steering, increasing the risk of a crash, Nissan says in documents released Saturday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Owners should contact the dealers if their steering wheel is off center or they feel vibration. Initially, dealers will inspect and replace any bent or broken tie rods. Once a new design is available, they will replace both the left and right tie rods at no cost to the owners.

Notification letters to owners will be mailed starting October 5th. A second letter will be issued once parts are available.

The documents say many of the same cars were recalled in 2021 to fix the same problem. Vehicles repaired under a previous recall will need to get new tie rods when they are ready.
