Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s former first minister, has been arrested as part of a police investigation into Scottish National Party (SNP) finances, the latest and most senior SNP official to be taken into custody.

Police Scotland said in a statement: “A 52-year-old woman has been arrested today, Sunday, June 11, 2023, on suspicion of an investigation into the funding and finances of the Scottish National Party.”

“The woman has been taken into custody and is being questioned by Detective Scotland,” police said.

The police said they could not comment further as the investigation is ongoing.

Her husband is former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell He was arrested and released earlier this monthThe group’s treasurer Colin Beattie and officers then raided the party’s headquarters in Edinburgh.

Sturgeon, 52, announced his abrupt resignation as first minister in February after a nine-year stint as leader of Scotland’s independence movement from the United Kingdom.
