MLB Rumors: Latest on Shohei Ohtani, Free Agency as Winter Meetings End, Yankees Complete Juan Soto Trade

MLB’s annual winter meetings wrap up in Nashville after days filled with Shohei Ohtani speculation and a blockbuster trade. The Yankees pulled off their biggest move of the offseason to date on Wednesday night, completing a seven-player trade with the Padres. That brings Juan Soto to New York. The Yankees were one of the most exciting teams in the winter meetings and trades Red Sox outfielder Alex Vertugo Tuesday to align their lineup.

While there were some other notable deals (Craig Kimbrel Orioles, Eduardo Rodriguez to the D-Backs, Jaymar Candelario to the Reds), which are quieter than usual winter gatherings. The baseball world’s attention is on Ohtani, who remains in free agency but is poised to make a decision in the coming days. More serious contenders for American League MVP are starting to emerge. The Dodgers, Blue Jays and Giants have all reportedly met with Ohtani in recent days, and the current Angels are still in the mix to re-sign him. Once Ohtani is signed, the free agent market could really open up, especially for Japanese franchise Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Many of Ohtani’s teams are also said to be in Yamamoto, who could land a deal in the $250-$300 million range.
