Meghan Markle described the “painful” moment she met Kate Middleton, wife of Prince William, shortly after her affair with Harry came to light.
in Their new Netflix documentary “Harry and Meghan,” which was released on Thursday, the Duchess of Sussex said she was “surprised” by how much the “official” royal family continues to keep it formal in a private setting, before slipping cryptic in Princess of Wales.
Markle said she was not familiar with the formalities with which the royals go about their days, and welcomed the Prince and Princess of Wales barefoot and in ripped jeans.
“I was a hugger and I was always laughing,” Markle said, pointing to her First meeting with Kate. “I think I started to understand pretty quickly that the formalities on the outside are done on the inside.”
Markle said she did not expect the royals to act the same way behind closed doors as they do at public events.
“There’s a forward-facing method, and then you close the door and say, ‘Oh, cool.'” We can relax now. But this formality spreads on both sides. And that was surprising to me,” Markle admitted.
“It’s so funny looking back now because now I know so much,” she said, adding that she was “so glad I wasn’t so happy at the time because I was able to be myself without a lot of preparation.”
Elsewhere in the episode, Markle claimed she had no idea she would have to pounce on her Queen Elizabeth II when they met.
“My grandmother was the first senior member of the royal family that Meghan met,” Prince Harry explained. “she [Markle] He had no idea what it all consisted of. It was a shock to the system for her.”
“I mean, it’s surreal. I didn’t know I was going to meet her until moments before,” Markle recalls.
