Max Scherzer’s exits begin to confront the injured Cardinals

NEW YORK – The Mets, already playing the first half of this season without any of their aces, on Wednesday faced the prospect of another loss. Max Scherzer He left his start against the Cardinal in the sixth game after feeling uncomfortable on the field. He walked off the field with a coach.

The Mets did not immediately say a word regarding the nature or seriousness of the Scherzer case.

On his eighth start since joining the Mets on a three-year, $130 million contract, Scherzer looked sullen when throwing an 85-mph slide in the dirt to Albert Pujols. Almost immediately, Scherzer called coach Joe Julia, who came to the mound along with manager Buck Showalter and shooting coach Jeremy Hefner. The team discussed for a few moments before Scherzer walked out alongside Julia.

The Mets can’t stand an injury to Scherzer, especially with both DeGrum and Taylor Miguel on the injured list. DeGrom, who was diagnosed with a stress reaction in his right shoulder in the last week of spring training, won’t be back until late June or, more likely, July. Megill is dealing with inflammation of the right biceps and is currently closed from throwing.

The rest of the Mets’ rotation includes Chris Bassett, Carlos Carrasco and Taiwan Walker, with David Peterson and Trevor Williams as depth options.

In deGrom’s absence, Scherzer was the pivot, entering Wednesday’s game with a 4-1 record and 2.66 ERA.
