Blige talked about how her fans’ support has inspired the content of her album during an interview e! Connected.
She remembers: ‘Sometimes I’d walk out of my house and I’d have the worst day of my life and it would just come out of nowhere, from eight to eighty-sometimes an eight-year-old would say, ‘I love you.’
The performer made sure to emphasize how integral the support of her fans was in creating her album.

“That’s why I never stopped, because people actually said they needed me to keep going and that helped me keep going,” she said.
Blige went on to express that the tracks featured on the album were primarily autobiographical.
She said, “It’s real life stuff that happened, and it has life… It’s my songs, and when Not Gonna Cry comes along, I go straight to that moment and what was going on.”
