A strong winter storm is moving across New England on Monday, forecasters said, bringing up to 6 inches of snow to high elevations in Massachusetts and up to a foot to parts of New Hampshire.
Heavy rain is expected to turn to snow Monday afternoon in eastern and northeastern Massachusetts — including Boston — according to the National Weather Service, with forecasters expecting 2 to 4 inches and wind gusts of 35 mph by 9 p.m. Service.
In Hampton and East Hampshire counties, forecasters expect 3 to 6 inches of snow and “a light frost” by 5 p.m., according to the weather service.
Afternoon snow could complicate evening travel, forecasters warned.
Most of Massachusetts will have snow — except parts of the Cape Cod, which will still get rain — by 4 p.m.
Forecasters warned drivers to expect icy roads and “smooth” delayed travel, and encouraged anyone traveling on the roads to use caution and slow down when driving.

In central, northern and southern New Hampshire, heavy snowfall is expected through 10 p.m. Monday, forecasters said, with some areas receiving totals of 7 to 10 inches or more. They said local travel conditions were “extremely dangerous”.
“Steady moderate snow” and “low visibility” will have the biggest impacts, the weather service said.
“Building snow will continue throughout the day today, leading to heavy snowfall locally, leading to rapid snow accumulation and extremely hazardous travel conditions,” forecasters warned.
