Former IRS contractor Accused of leaking Former President Donald Trump pleaded guilty in federal court Thursday to stealing tax information from thousands of the richest Americans.
Prosecutors said Charles Littlejohn, of Washington, DC, sent Trump’s tax returns and other data to two media outlets, which “published numerous articles detailing tax information obtained from the defendant.”
Littlejohn pleaded guilty in late September to one count of disclosing tax information he was accused of.
The contractor’s crime affected so many people that prosecutors plan to create a public website to notify victims of any developments in the cases.
During the plea hearing, one of Trump’s attorneys gave a victim impact statement, calling the crime “a tremendous violation.”
Trump’s lawyer, Alina Hubba, said Trump’s income was “placed in a vault with the IRS” and suggested the leak could have cost Trump votes in the 2020 election.
Hubba said Trump opposes the plea deal and wants Littlejohn to face the maximum sentence of five years in prison.
Judge Ana Reyes, the federal judge overseeing the case, said, “I absolutely agree that it is unacceptable for anyone to take the law into their own hands.”
“I can’t overstate how troubled I am by what happened,” Reyes said. “Make no mistake, this is unacceptable.”
The sentencing hearing has been adjourned to January 29.
