Eminem, Lionel Richie, Carly Simon, Eurythmics, Duran Duran and Pat Benatar have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Voted by more than 1,000 artists, historians and musicians – “each had a profound impact on the sound of youth culture and helped change the course of rock ‘n’ rolls,” said John Sykes. Rock Hall, in a statement Wednesday.
Barton said on social media that he “bowed respectfully” and did not want to get votes from the rest of the candidates and “did not get that right.” The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation responded by saying that ballots had already been sent and that it was up to voters to decide whether to elect Barton. To qualify, artists must have published their first record 25 years ago. Barton, Richie, Simon and Duran Duran were selected in their first co-round. Simon qualified and was nominated for the first time this year in over 25 years. Eminem became the 10th hip-hop actor to be cut on his first ballot.
Richie, a former member of The Commodore, said it was an “incredible honor” to be chosen for the hall, in a celebrity solo career that included pop classics such as “Endless Love”, “All Night Long” and “Hello”. He thanked voters and fans on Instagram and said, “Congratulations to all my fellow friends for 2022!”
The Hall announced Wednesday that Judas Priest and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis will receive awards for musical excellence and that Harry Belfont and Elizabeth Cotton will be honored with the Early Influence Award.
Other artists and groups that failed this year in the Artists category were A Tribe Called Quest, Rage Against the Machine, Dionne Warwick, Beck, Kate Bush, DEVO, Fela Kuti, MC5 and the New York Dolls.
Barton is very associated with folk music and is in the Country Hall of Fame, but he also sings songs with a sense of rock. Artists who have created both Rock Hall and Country Hall of Fame include Brenda Lee, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Seth Atkins, Hank Williams and the Everly Brothers.
The opening ceremony will take place on November 5 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
