Bank executive fired for allegedly urinating on plane passenger – DW – 06/01/2023

US banking giant Wells Fargo says it has fired an executive in India, Shankar Mishra, after he allegedly urinated on a fellow passenger on an Air India flight.

Mishra, the former Vice President of Operations for Wells Fargo in India, lost his job after he allegedly urinated on a 72-year-old woman. I wrote to the airline to file a complaint about the alleged incident that occurred last November.

Wells Fargo said in a statement that it “holds employees to the highest standards of professional and personal conduct and we find these allegations deeply disturbing.”

“This individual has been terminated from Wells Fargo,” the statement said.

Wells Fargo also noted that the bank “cooperates with law enforcement authorities and requests that any additional inquiries be directed to them.”

Flying drunk

Mishra, from Mumbai, was reportedly intoxicated at the time of his flight from New York to Delhi on November 26 when the alleged incident took place.

New Delhi police said Mishra was still at large, although they were in contact with his family.

However, Mishra issued a statement through a lawyer saying that he had already reached a settlement with the woman he had allegedly urinated on, from Karnataka, and had paid her damages.

Victim reports distress

India today It stated that Mishra’s statement, which was issued through his lawyer, stated in part, that “WhatsApp messages between the accused and the lady clearly show that the accused cleaned clothes and bags on November 28, and the same thing was delivered on November 30.”

The statement added that the woman returned the amount of compensation paid by Mishra on December 19 through her daughter and then filed a follow-up complaint on December 20 last year to the airline.

In her complaint, she said that she had told the crew to get caught by the airport police and that he should stay away from her. Instead, it claims, “the crew brought the perpetrator in front of me against my will, and forced us to sit across from each other in the crew seats,” India Times mentioned.

When Mishra woke up, the woman said, he apologized and started crying. He was alleged to have begged her not to make any complaints.

She reportedly found it difficult to insist that he be arrested or charged after he expressed remorse for his actions.

Air India was recently acquired by the Tata Group after decades of state control. The airline faced heavy criticism over its handling of the woman’s complaint.

India’s aviation regulator criticized the airline for not reporting the incident.

In a statement, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation said, “The behavior of the concerned airline seems unprofessional and has led to a systematic failure.”
