Baldur’s Gate 3 decided that Astarion is canonically stupid

One of Baldur’s Gate 3’s most famous companions had his head analyzed, and the results were clear: the man’s brain is smooth.

Astarion has been a fan-favorite member since Baldur’s Gate 3 was first released. He’s become one of the most iconic characters in gaming in a very short space of time, and voice actor Neil Newbon was even nominated for Best Performance at this year’s Game Awards.

It’s gotten to the point where Astarion makes up the majority of all Baldur’s Gate fanfiction, all on his own. Players are drawn to his personality and backstory as a vampire, and his narrative grows stronger as the game progresses.

It’s also a good thing that people don’t necessarily like Astarion for his mental strength, because, as some players have discovered, he’s been confirmed to have a very fluid mind in Baldur’s Gate 3 lore.

“Astarion’s beautiful brain may be a little less wrinkled than the rest, but you’re thirsty for its juicy cells,” the narration says.

Dramatic Mind’s obsession with eating his brain aside, it’s clear that Astarion isn’t actually the sharpest tool in the camp – though, to be fair, Baldur’s Gate 3’s companions have about three brain cells combined, and Lae’zel usually uses them.

Many players thought the description was very accurate, with one commenter saying: “Honestly, I’ve always viewed Astarion as not being smart. I love him to death and think he’s one of the best written characters in the game, but he makes terrible mistakes because he’s a desperate animal fighting for his life while trapped in the corner.
