In 2023, the average annual wage for all American workers will be $48,060, according to a report Bureau of Labor StatisticsWhich means that Americans in about half of the states earned less than this standard, while workers in the other half earned more.

The Northeast and West tend to have higher incomes compared to the South and some states in the Midwest.
Massachusetts tops the rankings with the highest median wage at $60,690 for individual workers, while Mississippi has the lowest median wage in the country at $37,500.

Local wages are typically tied to the local cost of living, which means that many of the states where workers earn the most money are also the most expensive states to live in.
For example, Massachusetts has the second highest cost of living in the United States, while Mississippi has the second lowest cost of living, according to a Bloomberg report. Missouri Center for Economic Research and Information Cost of living index for each state, based on the Council for Community and Economic Research Survey data.
However, there are a few countries that are outliers. In Wyoming, workers earn 26th in median wages, but 18th in cost of living. Likewise, Florida has the 14th lowest median wage, but the 29th cheapest state to live in, according to MERIC.
