Avatar: The Way of Water breaks more box office records worldwide | film

Avatar: The Way of Water continues to march through the upper echelons of the all-time acquisition charts, becoming the sixth film to break the $2 billion mark in worldwide box office revenue.

That means Cameron has directed three of the top four films of all time, with the first Avatar film coming in at number one with $2.9 billion, and Titanic at number three with $2.2 billion. Only Avengers: Endgame, in second place with $2.8 billion, breaks the sequence.

Avatar: The Way of Water’s results were largely buoyed by its dominance outside the US box office. Deadline reports that it became the #1 film of all time in Austria, Lebanon, Slovakia, Mongolia and Colombia among others, and became the biggest Hollywood film of all time in India (with $57.9 million). Its strongest territory outside the United States is China, where it was the number one film for five weeks and earned $229.7 million. However, the Lunar New Year holiday saw a host of new commercial releases, with The Wandering Earth II supplanting it at the top of the charts.
