A new study has found that plants “scream” as they are harvested

Vegetarians, we're afraid we have some news you might not like…

A new study shows that plants make “screaming” sounds when they feel sad.

Research has found that they produce clicking sounds that humans cannot hear without the use of scientific equipment.

Research published in cell In 2023, he showed that plants produce these sounds during times of acute stress.

Lilach Hadani is an evolutionary biologist at Tel Aviv University. He guided me He said: “Even in a quiet field, there are actually sounds that we don't hear, and those sounds carry information. There are animals that can hear these sounds, so there's the potential for a lot of acoustic interaction.”

“Plants interact with insects and other animals all the time, and many of these organisms use sound to communicate, so it would be suboptimal for plants not to use sound at all.”

The results show that stressed plants make incredibly high-pitched popping sounds, while unstressed plants make no noise. The study definition included distressed plants whose stems had been cut or dried.

However, it is not yet clear how plants produce this noise.

“Now that we know that plants make sounds, the next question is: Who is listening?” Hadani said.

“We are currently investigating the responses of other organisms, both animals and plants, to these sounds, and we are also exploring our ability to identify and interpret sounds in completely natural environments.”

It comes after A New study It has been suggested that Western industrial diets may change the way humans digest plants.
