3 New York City officers injured in knife attack, suspect shot near New Year’s Eve ball drop

A man attacked New York City police officers with a knife not far from the city’s New Year’s Eve celebration, police said early Sunday.

Two were hit on the head and hospitalized. An officer — a rookie — suffered a fractured skull on his first day on patrol with the NYPD, Police Commissioner Keith Sewell said during a press conference. In another, an officer in his eighth year with the NYPD suffered a serious injury. All three officers are in stable condition and are expected to recover, a spokesman said Sunday.

The 19-year-old suspect has been identified by police sources as Trevor Pickford CBS New York, was shot in the shoulder in one of the offices. He is also expected to recover.

According to CBS New York, Pickford was recently placed on an FBI terror watch list after his aunt reported that he had become radicalized online and expressed a desire to travel abroad to fight Islamic extremists.

After 10 p.m., eight blocks from Times Square, thousands packed the city’s annual New Year’s ball.

Mayor Eric Adams said he spoke to an injured officer at the hospital who received stitches.

“He was in good spirits,” Adams said. “He understood that his role saved the lives of New Yorkers today.”

Adams praised the officers’ actions and said the incident was isolated.

“We are very pleased with how our officers handled this situation. All three officers are in stable condition and there are no credible threats to New Yorkers at this time,” Adams said.

The assistant director in charge of the FBI’s New York field office said the suspect appeared to have acted alone.
