LIUtilities boasts that its WinTasks Pro 5 accomplishes two helpful tasks for its users. It displays a list of currently running processes better than Windows Task Manager, and it also helps to keep computers safe from adware and spyware. DevHardware's own Quantum Skyline takes a look at how well the software accomplishes these two related but very different tasks--and comes up with some serious reservations.

When people have trouble with their Windows-based computers, one of the two things that immediately come to my mind are:

• Are they using Internet Explorer as a browser?
• Are they using a virus scanner?

While I'm not about to go on to blast Microsoft about Internet Explorer, its security record has been far from spectacular. Also, Windows installations that have not been updated by regular visits to Windows Update (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) have numerous security holes in them, some of which have led to a few of the most famous worms in the history of the Internet. Klez, Nimda, Slammer, and Code Red are on that list.

Security holes aren't used only by worms. Adware and spyware--programs that are designed to pop up ads on your screen and keep a log of your computing habits, respectively--sometimes use them.  Adware and spyware are also bundled with some freely downloadable software. These ad-supported titles stay afloat because of the sponsoring received from ad companies.

The immediate problems of adware and spyware are obvious. Adware, at its best, is a nuisance. Spyware brings up all kinds of privacy concerns. However, they are also linked to system instability and crashes, and the way these programs operate make them difficult to remove. LIUtilities WinTasks Pro 5 aims to help in finding and rooting out adware and spyware.

LIUtilities' WinTasks Pro 5 is an enhanced version of Windows' Task Manager or top in Linux. What these programs do is display a list of currently running processes. By monitoring the currently running processes, a system administrator can monitor CPU usage, memory usage, and keep track of what a computer is doing in a general sense.
