Apple Boot Camp - So why did they really do it?
So why did Apple really do this? Are they hoping to tap a larger part of the market by going after Windows users now? Are we going to start seeing joint Microsoft/Apple commercials on TV, with Windows Media Center running on one of those colorful iMacs?
One train of thought out there on the Internet is that Boot Camp is nothing but a genius marketing campaign by Apple. The company is not endorsing running the Windows Operating System, it is endorsing the fact that Windows will run on their hardware.
Notice that, in order to install Windows, you must have OSX installed, to run Boot Camp. Boot Camp creates the driver disk for you, re-partitions the hard drive, and sets up a boot manager to let you choose which OS you want to boot to.
Where is the option to just install Windows and not even boot to OSX? It doesn't exist. Why do you think that is?
In my opinion, Apple doesn't really want people running Windows on their machines. It's a point made obvious to me by how much they disclaim everywhere that they do not support Windows in the slightest. But if Apple doesn't care about Windows running on its hardware, then why the whole big hullabaloo?
I'll tell you why. Apple is brilliant.
The main reason that people won't leave their PCs and head for Apple-land is not because of Windows. It's because of their Windows programs. Apple is attempting to take that obstacle out of the picture by making it possible to use your Windows programs, natively, on Apple hardware. This way, more users will venture the move from PC-based systems to Macs.
And what they are betting on, is that once people are able to utilize and play with the OSX interface, they will eventually give up booting into Windows for any reason. And that is precisely why their solution allows for ADDING and DELETING a Windows installation, while leaving your OSX installation intact.
Will it work? I bet it will. I believe that a lot more people will take advantage of the cool and sexy Apple hardware, now that they can have their Windows safety-net. I believe this will also, in time, convince a good number of those people to switch from Windows to OSX as their primary operating system, as well.
