Zune 30 GB Review - Design and Cosmetics

What I like about the design of the Zune 30GB is its simplicity. When you first take a look at the body of the Zune, you see the visual similarities to the Apple iPod. It is very similar in size, and the screen and controls are pretty similar as well.  The user will have the choice of three different colors with the Zune: black, white, and brown. Brown is a bit of a weird choice, but it is still attractive and gives the Zune a sort of chocolate look.  Other colors will soon follow these three base colors.

The screen of the Zune is very nice, with a huge three-inch viewable area. The screen may be viewed in portrait or landscape position, at the user's discretion.  Below the screen, you can find the main control dial. This dial is a five-way click wheel which will navigate the user throughout the menu system. The up and down part of this control pad is used to control the volume. This controller makes the Zune very simple to use, because there are not any other buttons on the Zune's body to complicate things.

The Zune's body has a matte finish, and is made out of a rubbery-plastic substance.  It seems pretty durable, and stays fairly clean with normal use.  It is a little bit bigger and boxier than the Apple iPod 30GB, which is a downfall of the Zune.  Despite the larger size, it still feels relatively compact, solid and comfortable.  The overall dimensions of the Zune 30GB are 2.4 x 0.6 x 4.4 inches.  Though a little tall, this player will still fit inside most pockets without a problem.  This Zune weighs in at 5.6 ounces.

The look of the Zune is very attractive in any of the colors available.  The way Microsoft chose to do the paint scheme with the Zune is very unique, because the corners of the Zune have a glowing effect to them. I think you have to see the Zune in person in order to appreciate the fine craftsmanship that has gone into the design of these players.
