Docupen R-700 Rechargeable, Portable Scanner Review - Results

    Results

More than anything, the Docupen is a specialty product. Those who can use a portable scanner will find it a great help. If work or a hobby has you looking at papers that you want to duplicate or make electronic, you could find it handy. It would be great for students and researchers who want to take book pages with them. Or if your work has you dealing with contracts, legal documents, and bills it may help to duplicate your records.

For the casual user though, the $160 price tag might be a little much. Also those who only need a basic scanner or demand high quality should look at a desktop one. The Docupen was not made for either of these purposes though. It was made for being ultraportable, and that's what it does well.

    The Good

    • Scanner is extremely light and small. It is perfect for portable use.
    • 200dpi scans are clear enough to read easily.
    • Though not perfect, the OCR software will be good enough for many people, provided you scan at 200dpi.
    • Performing scans is so easy that you'll find yourself playing with it on all the papers on your desk.
    • Rechargeable batteries power-up via USB, which is a very handy touch.

    The Bad

    • The documentation is poorly organized, has outdated material, and lacks information.
    • The low quality 100dpi is not easy to read and does not OCR well.
    • The price makes the scanner only worthwhile for those who can use it with some regularity.
