Drivers and Installation
PLANon made it very clear that I needed to install the software before plugging the scanner into the USB port. A warning about this was both on the Quick Start card and on the USB cable bag. I’m pretty sure anyone would se this warning before getting all the parts out of the box.
This in mind, I set to work. I inserted the installation CD and it autostarted.

I was eager to get scanning, so I hit the “Driver Installation” button. After giving it my name and company name, and it asked for a location to dump some files. Then it installed the CP2101 USB driver and the UART Bridge Controller Device driver. I then hit the “Software Installation” button and installed PaperPort.
With everything installed, I was ready to get started. I opened PaperPort and plugged in the Docupen. Windows alerted me that the USB device was not recognized. I opened up the USB connections, and indeed it was not finding the drivers.

That’s no problem. I knew where the program dumped the drivers, and Windows makes this easy. I used the hardware wizard, and I pointed it to the folder where I asked it to save the files.

I hit “OK,” and it loaded up the CP2101 USB drivers again. This time it worked, and the computer recognized the Docupen. This was a little run around, but it was not a problem. In retrospect, maybe I was supposed to reboot the computer after the initial driver installation, but that has never made a difference for USB devices I have used before. All things considered, I would say that the installation went smoothly and the computer had no compatibility quirks with the scanner.
